It goes back ultimately to Greek rhapsōidíā ‘epic poem recited on a single occasion’, which was derived from rhapsōidós ‘writer of such poems’. This was a compound formed from rháptein ‘sew together’ and ōidé ‘song’ (source of English ode, parody, prosody, etc).
